Figure 3.3.1 is a decision-making flow chart, which shows the process of
selecting the appropriate PSC based on the preferred options and to develop an
understanding of how the process is done when planning a project. It can equally be
used to communicate to the Client, and others, the reasons for the decision and to
give them a better understanding of the process.
3.4 RIBA Standard Professional Services Contract 2018:
Architectural Services
The RIBA Standard Professional Services Contract for Architectural Services 2018
is suitable where the Architect/Consultant undertakes a commission for architectural
services on projects using a traditional form of procurement.
The Standard PSC has been designed for large development projects of any value
where the Client is experienced and, given the likely complexity of the project, the
Contract Conditions are more detailed and comprehensive.
The Schedule of Services is comprehensive and allows for the Architect/Consultant
to undertake a number of architectural roles such as Project Lead, Architect/
Consultant, Lead Designer and Contract Administrator, to reflect the complexity
of the project and the need for more roles within a larger Design Team. As well as
providing core architectural services, the Architect/Consultant can also provide
advice and information on specialist matters that are within their expertise or those
of appointed Subconsultants such as planning, landscape or access consultancy,
etc. Conversely, the PSC also states the services that the Architect/Consultant is not
providing and for which the Client will need to separately appoint other consultants
to complete the Design Team.
It is anticipated that any services at RIBA Plan of Work Stages 0 and 7 will be
commissioned as separate and distinct PSCs. However, any minor roles and
services could be added if required but the Architect/Consultant should check and
