From the worked example of a Contractual Tree in Figure 6.7, the following points
can be gleaned:
• City Centre Architects are undertaking the majority of the project roles.
• Wires & Fires Ltd and Big Beam Ltd will be appointed directly by the client.
•City Centre Architects will contract directly with the cost consultant and the
health and safety adviser.
•The cost consultant and construction lead roles transfer between parties and
this has been clarified.
•From the Project Roles Table (Figure 6.4) it can be seen that Wires & Fires Ltd
and Big Beam Ltd are not involved at every stage. It is not necessary to clarify
this in the diagram as they are the only parties undertaking their respective roles.
•At the time of preparing the Contractual Tree, the contractor is the only party
that has not been identified.
Summary
By carefully considering the roles that are required on a project at each stage
and who is best placed to undertake them, along with the core decision on
how and when the contractor will be engaged, it is possible to prepare the
Project Roles Table and the Contractual Tree. The processes involved aim
to ensure that these outputs are carefully considered and robust. This allows
detailed Schedules of Services, Information Exchanges and design responsibilities
to be considered in greater detail. These are examined in the next chapter.
