the day-to-day running of the project will be undertaken. HOW encourages
the use of Common Standards to make the design process as
streamlined as possible.
This book advocates assembling the project team using the following process
to determine the WHY, WHO, WHAT, WHEN and HOW aspects:
• The WHY aspects are considered with the client (see Chapter 5).
•The WHO and WHEN aspects are developed by the project lead, possibly
in conjunction with the lead designer. These set the scene for preparing the
WHAT documents.
•The WHAT aspects are developed by the project lead and the lead designer
to allow fee proposals by all parties to be prepared and submitted.
•The HOW aspects are prepared for discussion by all members of the project
team. Some clients may have prescriptive requirements whereas in other
cases the project team may develop the Project Execution Plan.
•The WHY, WHO, WHAT, WHEN and HOW are bound as required into the
professional services contracts and operational or Building Contracts.
•The WHY, WHO, WHAT, WHEN and HOW outputs continue to be used for
the duration of the project to ensure that the day-to-day management of the
project is successful.
The completed documents, bound into the contractual documents, also provide
supporting evidence in the event of a dispute; however, the holistic nature of the
preparation is aimed at avoiding any disputes arising in the first place. This might
be defined as the ‘contractual non-contractual’ approach.
