Assembling a Collaborative Project Team
On smaller projects, the design team is likely to consist of two or three parties,
who are likely to have worked together before and have established effective,
albeit informal, working processes. On larger projects, the design team is likely
to comprise many parties and there is a strong likelihood that members of
the team will be working together for the first time. This dynamic, different
procurement routes, the increase of specialist subcontractor design and the
increasing diversity of software and communication tools will inevitably result
in different processes being adopted from project to project.
These variables can have a significant impact on a practice’s processes and the
risks can only be overcome if everyone agrees to adopt Common Standards and
use ‘plug and play’ processes (see page 97).

Why has the traditional project team changed?
Time, cost and quality are the three procurement mantras. Of these three, cost
has been the biggest driver of change in the constitution of the project team,
although time has also had a significant influence.
