Subconsultant agreements, collateral warranties and novation agreements may
also be required to ‘join the dots’ between other parties in the project team or
to connect them to third parties with a vested interest in a project (a tenant, for
example). Information on these contractual documents is also contained in
The RIBA Legal Handbook.
As a reminder, the ‘kit of parts’ that has been set out in this publication can be
used with the RIBA, or other, forms of appointment, and consists of the outputs
from the process that builds a project team, as illustrated in Figure 10.1.
One further complication is that one consultant may need to appoint another
(see Contractual Tree examples on pages 64 and 66). This can be done with the
same professional services contracts, but an alternative is to use a subconsultant
agreement, such as the version available in the RIBA suite of appointment
documents. Either way, the crucial point is that the requirements set out in the
contract with the subconsultant should be ‘back-to-back’ with the contract put
in place with the client.

RIBA Enterprises produces a number of professional services contracts

The suite also includes a subconsultant contract allowing the back-to-back
appointment of one consultant by another. The suite has been prepared for use

clients. While those using the RIBA documents will be familiar with the various
